The male Black Molly can be identified by its dense and lustrous black color while the female may be black or of any other color. Another distinct physical trait of the male is its large dorsal fin which can measure up to 2 cm; also, the head of the male Black Molly is quite angular.

Breeding information on the Black molly

Black mollies give birth to fish fry and not eggs; the gestation period ranges from 40 to 70 days. A female will produce a school of 20 to 60 young ones or more. If you are breeding Black Mollies, it is vital to give the young fishes of the species plenty of plants to hide around in, so that they do not get eaten.

When breeding the Black Molly, it is advisable to put in 2 to 3 females for every male.

Black Mollies are easy to maintain and even tempered fishes that do well even when placed in a community tank. Just make sure that they have plenty of plants and ample of open water. The only thing to watch out for are infections and diseases in Black Mollies since the species shows a marked susceptibility to ailments. Treat the fishes at the first sign of a disorder to increase the chances of survival.
